Self-Care

As we age, the one thing many are probably not thinking about is self-care, or are we?

Having made my semi-annual visit to the Doctor’s office last month, I realized the importance of self-care.

Self-Care is essential, especially when you see others incapable of caring for themselves.

This past Saturday, May 13, 2023, I wished my Grandmother Happy Birthday as she celebrated her 102nd Birthday.

One of my other joys is bringing communion to one of my Brother Knights, who is 101 years old.  He’ll be 102 the first week of August. (August 3, 2023) As mentioned above, my Grandmother turned 102 during the Mother’s Day Weekend, which is a blessing.

In both situations, I know the children who provide care for their parents, helping their aging parents through life’s challenges.

I also know from experience that when you get a certain age in life, one would think you know what is required; however, that is not always the case.

Sometimes, regardless how independent you might feel you will need help from others just like the two individuals I spoke about that are 101- and 102-years young.

Both have their children helping them through life, just as my sisters help my mother.

I was able to help my father 16 years earlier during his colposcopy surgery and then during his final two weeks of life while in hospice.

You and I will someday realize that we are no longer 30 and bulletproof.  Some might still think they are bulletproof; however, the reality will set in sooner or later.

What we do today will pay dividends for tomorrow, especially what we decide to eat.

I’m reminded about something I’ve read in one of many books I read: We didn’t suddenly wake up 30 pounds overnight or lose our zeal for life overnight.  It’s a slow progression by not paying attention to the signs.

There are various definitions of self-care; however, for simplicity, I’ll give one through the website “The Law of Attraction.com.”

What Is Self-Care? The Definition of Self Care

Self-care is a broad term that encompasses just about anything you do to be good to yourself. In a nutshell, it’s about being as kind to yourself as you would be to others.

What Is Self-Care & Why Is Caring About Yourself Important?

I believe that you will find the entire article written by Katherine Hurst interesting as she talks about:

  • Benefits Of Self Care
  • Types Of Self Care
  • Sensory Self-Care Ideas
  • Physical Self-Care Ideas
  • 40 More Self-Care Ideas

Although many of us celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday, I also took solace in looking at self-care for myself.

I’m sure you, too, are exercising some form of “Emotional Self-Care Ideas” as Katherine Hurst mentions in the article, by keeping a daily journal and being honest about your feelings.

As you begin another week, consider your self-care and how you are doing.

Before I close, I must pay special honor to all the Mother’s in this world.

To all those with Mother’s living, it’s a reminder to tell them you love them, just as I did with my 102-year-old Grandmother.

You and I know that Mother’s Day is when you celebrate your first best friend and the person you always turn to when you need advice.  Mother’s Day is also a great time to show love for all the other incredible women in your life.

Therefore, to all the incredible women that provide input towards my blogs each week, I celebrate you as well!

As Willie Nelson said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.”

Said another way, “You will be blessed the moment you realize you already are.” – Bryant McGill

Continue practicing self-care and pay attention to the signs around you.
